Executive Team

Clifford M. Gross, Ph.D.

Chief Executive Officer

Cliff is a successful executive with 25 years of leadership experience in academia and commercial enterprises. He is passionate about the development and commercialization of intellectual property to improve the quality of life and create lasting value. Previously, he founded Biomechanics Corp and UTEK where he served as CEO and Chairman and was President and CEO of Innovacorp, the provincial venture capital fund of Nova Scotia. Cliff has served as Acting Director of the graduate program in Biomechanics and Ergonomics at New York University, Chairman of the Nelson Rockefeller Department of Biomechanics at the New York Institute of Technology and Research Professor at the University of South Florida. Recently, he authored Too Good to Fail: Creating Marketplace Value from the World’s Brightest Minds and is a named inventor on 19 issued patents. Cliff is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and serves on the board of directors of the Technology Transfer Society and the State University of New York at Empire State College. He received his Ph.D. from New York University and an MBA from the University of Oxford.

Malcolm Groat

Finance Director

Mr. Groat has worked for many years as a consultant to companies in technology, natural resources, and general commerce. Previously, following an early career with PwC in London, he held CFO, COO, and CEO roles in established corporations including Executive Chairman Med Mining and Minerals Ltd; and Group FD and COO of E C Harris LLP. Malcolm currently serves as a Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Audit Committee of Baronsmead VCT 4 plc and London Mining plc. Mr. Groat is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors, Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, and Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He holds degrees from the universities of St Andrews in modern history and politics (MA) and Warwick (MBA).

Max Inglis

General Counsel

Max Inglis has extensive legal and commercial experience. His career began in legal private practice at the pre-eminent law firms of Linklaters and then Clifford Chance where he worked on multi-billion pound transactions for private equity firms, financial institutions and FTSE 100 companies. Secondments to Europe and the Middle East provided opportunities to further develop his knowledge as well as business and transaction skills. In 2011 Max founded his own professional services firm acting as an advisor to investment firms and banks on a variety of deals. Max has practiced in a wide variety of disciplines, which has meant he has been exposed to a broad spectrum of commercial situations, obtaining expertise in corporate finance, banking, securitisations and derivatives. Max has been awarded an MBA from the University of Oxford with Distinction, a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southampton and a Diplôme from the Université de Grenoble. He attended the College of Law, London where he gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Law with Commendation and a Distinction on the Legal Practice Course.

Walter G. Copan, Ph.D.

VP Technology Transfer

Walt is an internationally recognized leader in intellectual property, technology management and commercialization. His broadly-based technology, transactions and market experience span large company, entrepreneurial business and public sector organizations, and include innovations for energy and climate change mitigation. He served as President of TAEUS Corporation, and as Managing Director, Technology Commercialization and Partnerships at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Prior to joining BNL, he was Executive VP and CTO for Clean Diesel Technologies, Inc. He was previously Principal Licensing Executive at National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and served as Managing Director, Technology Transfer and Licensing for Lubrizol Corporation, responsible for corporate ventures, strategy, business development, IP and licensing. He was Regional Vice President U.S.A. on the board of the Licensing Executives Society, and served on the National Advisory Council to the U.S. Federal Laboratory Consortium. He completed his Ph.D. at Case Western Reserve University and the executive business program at Harvard Business School. He was recognized by Case Western Reserve University as Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 2008.

Michael Kayat, Ph.D.

VP Sales & Marketing

As a seasoned technology sales and marketing executive, Mike has a successful track record in leading global product sales teams within a wide range of markets and technology sectors. He has extensive hands-on experience with successfully deploying disruptive technologies in the context of open innovation programs. Over the last 15 years, he has focused on accelerating the growth of high technology companies. At Exa Corporation, a NASDAQ-listed physics simulation company, he was Vice President of Sales and Marketing during the startup and emerging growth phases. As Sales Director at SMAL Camera Technologies, Mike achieved long term supplier contracts with world-wide automotive manufacturers. Cypress Semiconductor subsequently acquired SMAL. At photonics companies Ocean Optics and B&W Tek, Mike served as VP Sales and Marketing, where he led global teams in deploying innovative products. Projects involved IP analytics, strategy and commercialization, together with developing product roadmaps. Mike is a co-author of “Innovate or Perish: Managing the Enduring Technology Company in the Global Market”, ed. Edward Kahn. Mike received a Ph.D. in Physics from University of Leicester and an MBA from Pepperdine University.

Amy Shim

Director of Client Services

Amy has played a key role in providing service and support to large U.S. institutional investors and technology companies. Prior to Tekcapital, she was responsible for account management and institutional client relations at Western Asset Management. Previously, she worked within the Corporate Finance Group at Moody’s Investors Service in New York, specializing in issuer relations. In that role, she was involved in the development of the infrastructure and processes used to create Moody’s Global Middle Office operations. Additionally, Amy has served as a strategic adviser and consultant to several innovative companies developing low carbon vehicles. Since 2012, Amy has been a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children via CASA of Los Angeles. She holds a BA degree in economics from Smith College and an MBA from the University of Oxford, with a concentration in Technology Strategy and Marketing.

Annette Reid-Antigua

Director of IP Value Creation

Annette works with clients to generate significant value for them with our proprietary intellectual property portfolio. She has more than 23 years of sales leadership in developing advanced technology solutions. Annette previously served as VP with an IP analytics, legal and cyber risk company, where she created a new sales model for core cyber services. Annette also served as VP of Strategic Solutions at CIBER, where she implemented numerous strategies with substantial revenue impact. Recruited to EDS (HP), she led large transactions which consistently exceeded sales targets and for which she received top performance awards for sales excellence.

María Kowalski

Business Development Associate Latin America

María helps our Latin American clients create marketplace value from university IP. She is a skilled creative professional from Venezuela. María managed the Innovation in Media Content Creation Seminars and master classes that took place at the University of Miami, New York University, San Francisco State University and TEC Monterrey, México. She has more than 18 years of experience innovating in the creative field, where she held leadership positions in the creation of new TV channels, digital platforms, brand activations, advertising campaigns, music festivals and fashion shows. Previously, Maria has worked with leading brands such as Levi’s, Coca-Cola, and the Discovery Networks


Glen Gardner

President, Vortechs Group

Glen Gardner has been an executive recruiter for technology transfer and information technology professionals for 20 years. His Vortechs Group team have placed talented professionals at top-rated universities and national laboratories world-wide. Glen has a degree in nuclear engineering technology and served in the US Navy nuclear power program. He has a background in sales and sales training, extensive interview and talent-management consulting expertise and high client satisfaction ratings. Glen is a member of the International Mountain Biking Association, Columbus Speedskating Club and was a volunteer at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Selwyn Lloyd

Chief Information Officer

Selwyn has 20+ years entrepreneurial/technology experience in software apps, data, telecoms, publishing and branded goods industries. He has been founder or co-founder of numerous technology companies and led software technology teams for the past 13 years. His clients have included the UK’s largest mobile phone operators, ISP’s, Universities and Colleges. Selwyn has developed our Innovation Discovery Network which effectively links together the IP output of 4,000 research universities for the first time. Selwyn has a diverse range of non commercial interests, including funding research into rare genetic mutation Retinoblastoma and helping young people with learning difficulties via non-exec roles at the Daisy Fund and the Oxford Football League. Selwyn holds a BA (Hons) from Loughborough University and an MBA from the University of Oxford.

Harrison Reed Gross

Digital Media Manager

Harrison’s background is in writing and copy editing. His experience includes running an indie publishing label, Sphirah, working as an account manager for Verizon, and freelance editing. As the main marketing content creator for Tekcapital, he is responsible for presenting the company in a clear and engaging fashion to our milieu. He writes TekBlog about promising innovations and emerging technologies, creates corporate communications and marketing content, and oversees the user experience of our sites and services. Harrison holds a BA degree in creative writing from Columbia University, and a BA in Bible studies from the Jewish Theological Seminary. He enjoys British sitcoms and has published ten chapbooks of surrealist poetry.
